Is Stockholm safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Stockholm is a safe city for visitors, with low risk in the central areas. The realistic issues are pickpocketing in busy tourist spots and on public transport, and overpriced tourist restaurants in Gamla Stan. Gang-related crime in some outer suburbs makes the news but rarely affects visitors in the centre.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Most common at T-Centralen, on crowded metro lines, in Gamla Stan and around Drottninggatan; keep bags closed and phones secure.

Tourist-trap restaurants

Some places on Västerlånggatan in Gamla Stan charge high prices for average food; check menus first.

Winter conditions

Icy pavements and darkness from November to February; wear shoes with grip.

Swimming

City swimming spots are clean in summer, but water stays cool; swim at designated places.

Cycling

Bike lanes are busy; stay in the right lane and watch for e-scooters.

Areas and times to take care

The central islands, Södermalm, Östermalm and Djurgården are fine day and night. Take normal care around T-Centralen and in nightlife areas late at night.

Getting around safely

The SL metro, buses, trams and ferries are safe and reliable; tap a contactless card or buy a 24- or 72-hour ticket. The Arlanda Express reaches Central Station in 18–20 minutes. Use licensed taxis or apps and check the price displayed on the window.

Solo and women travellers

Stockholm is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal city precautions apply at night, and public transport is generally safe.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent. Winter is cold and dark, with about 6 hours of daylight in December; summer days are very long. Healthcare is high quality; EU visitors should bring their EHIC/GHIC and others travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 114 14 for non-urgent police matters.
