Is Skopje safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Skopje is generally safe for visitors, with low levels of violent crime against tourists. The realistic issues are petty theft in crowded places, overcharging in tourist restaurants, traffic and poor winter air quality.

The real risks

Petty theft

Keep an eye on bags and phones in the Old Bazaar, at Bit Pazar and on crowded buses.

Overcharging

Restaurants around Macedonia Square and prices quoted in euros at a rounded-up rate; check the menu and pay in denars.

Unordered extras

Bread, salads or rakija may be brought and charged; ask whether they are included.

Traffic

Drivers can be fast and impatient; take care at crossings.

Winter smog

Air pollution can be high on still winter days; check air quality and limit exertion outdoors.

Areas and times to take care

The centre, the Old Bazaar and Debar Maalo are safe and busy into the evening. As in any city, take more care late at night in quiet streets and around the bus and train stations.

Getting around safely

Taxis are cheap and metered, starting at about 40–50 MKD; use marked taxis and make sure the meter is running. City buses need a rechargeable card. At Matka, check the time of the last bus back.

Solo and women travellers

Skopje is generally comfortable for women travelling alone, and the centre is lively at night. Usual precautions apply in bars and with late-night taxis.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally considered safe in Skopje; many people still drink bottled water. Summers are hot (around 32–33°C), and winter air pollution is the main health concern. Wear good shoes for the cliff path at Matka.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency); 192 police, 194 ambulance, 193 fire.
