Is Santiago de Compostela safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Santiago de Compostela is a very safe city, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks are petty theft in crowded places and pilgrim hostels, and slippery granite streets in the rain. Walking the old town at night is not a concern for most visitors.
The real risks
Petty theft
Watch your bags and phone in crowds on Praza do Obradoiro, at the Pilgrims' Mass and in the market. In albergues, keep valuables with you, even in the shower.
Slippery granite
The old town's stone paving is very slippery in the rain. Wear shoes with grip.
Traffic outside the old town
The old town is mostly pedestrian, but the ring roads around it are busy. Cross at lights.
Coast and cliffs
At Finisterre and Muxía, waves and wind can be strong. Stay back from the edges of the rocks.
Areas and times to take care
The old town, the Alameda park and the Ensanche are all fine in the evening, and the streets are lively until late. The old town gets very quiet after midnight outside summer; walk along the main streets if you are out late.
Getting around safely
Taxis are licensed and can be found at ranks around the old town or called by phone. City buses and the airport bus are safe and reliable. Trains to A Coruña and Vigo are frequent.
Solo and women travellers
Santiago is very comfortable for solo women, and many walk the Camino alone. Eating alone at a bar or menú del día is completely normal. Use usual precautions late at night and in shared hostel dormitories.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Rain is frequent, especially from October to March, so bring waterproofs. Pilgrims arriving after long walks should look after blisters and sore feet; pharmacies are plentiful.
