Is San Sebastian safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

San Sebastián is a very safe city with low crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in busy pintxos bars and on the beaches in summer, and rough surf at Zurriola. Violent crime against visitors is rare.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

In crowded old-town bars at peak hours and on La Concha in summer. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets and do not leave bags on bar stools.

Beach theft

Bags left on the sand while swimming. Bring only what you need.

Surf and currents

Zurriola has strong waves and currents; La Concha is sheltered. Swim near lifeguards and follow flags.

Slippery paths

The coastal paths to Monte Urgull and between Getaria and Zarautz can be slippery after rain. Wear good shoes.

Late-night crowds

Summer weekends and fiestas such as Semana Grande bring big crowds; watch belongings.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid. The old town, Centro, Gros and the seafront promenades are lively and safe late into the evening.

Getting around safely

The centre is walkable. Dbus city buses are safe and frequent; taxis are licensed and metered. Lurraldebus and Euskotren link the coast and the French border.

Solo and women travellers

San Sebastián is very comfortable for solo women, including walking the promenades and pintxos bars at night. Normal precautions are enough.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and good. The Basque climate is mild but rainy, so pack a rain jacket. Sun protection matters on summer beach days. EU visitors should carry the European Health Insurance Card.

Emergency: 112 (all emergencies).
