Is San Pedro de Atacama safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
San Pedro de Atacama is a safe village, and crime against visitors is low. The realistic risks come from the environment: altitude, strong sun, extreme cold at dawn, long gravel roads and dehydration. Petty theft from hostels and cars happens occasionally.
The real risks
Altitude sickness
The village is at about 2,400 metres, and El Tatio and the lagoons are at 4,100–4,300 metres. Acclimatise for a day or two, drink water, avoid alcohol at first and descend if symptoms worsen.
Sun and dehydration
The air is very dry and the sun is intense at altitude. Use high-factor sun cream, sunglasses and a hat, and carry plenty of water.
Cold at dawn and night
Nights are cold all year, with lows of about 2°C in June in the village and well below freezing at El Tatio. Bring warm layers.
Driving and cycling
Roads are long, some are gravel, and there are no lights. Fill up in Calama, carry water and do not cycle back from Valle de la Luna in darkness without a headlamp.
Petty theft
Lock valuables in hostels, and do not leave anything visible in parked cars at trailheads.
Areas and times to take care
The village is calm and easy to walk at night, though streets are dark and unpaved. Carry a torch, and take ordinary care when walking back to accommodation in the outlying ayllus.
Getting around safely
Use established tour agencies with good reviews and well-maintained vehicles, especially for El Tatio, which starts in darkness on gravel roads. Shuttles from Calama airport are safe and frequent. If you drive, use a higher-clearance car and respect closures for snow or storms.
Solo and women travellers
San Pedro is generally comfortable for solo women, and many travel alone here. Use reputable agencies, keep an eye on your drink, and walk with others or use a taxi to outlying lodges at night.
Health, water and heat
Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water. Altitude sickness can affect anyone; ask a doctor before the trip if you have heart or lung conditions. Medical facilities in the village are basic; serious cases go to Calama, so travel insurance is essential.
