Is Salzburg safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Salzburg is a very safe city with low crime. The realistic risks are occasional pickpocketing in crowded old-town lanes and at the Christmas market, slippery cobbles in rain and snow, and weather or terrain risks on mountain day trips.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Possible in crowded Getreidegasse, around the cathedral square and at the Advent market. Keep bags closed and phones secure.

Slippery surfaces

Cobbles and steps are slippery in Salzburg's frequent rain and in winter ice; wear shoes with grip.

Cyclists

Bike paths along the Salzach are busy; stay out of cycle lanes when walking.

Mountain trips

On trips to the Untersberg or Eagle's Nest, check the weather and carry layers; conditions change quickly.

Crowds in Hallstatt

The village is extremely crowded in season; watch belongings and follow local rules for photography.

Ticket fraud

Buy festival and concert tickets from official sellers to avoid fake or overpriced tickets.

Areas and times to take care

No areas of Salzburg are considered risky for visitors. The old town and riverbanks are lively and safe in the evening; take normal care around the main station late at night.

Getting around safely

Trolleybuses and buses are safe and reliable. Taxis are metered and honest; ride-hailing is available in Austria's cities. Trains to Vienna, Munich and the Salzkammergut are safe and punctual.

Solo and women travellers

Salzburg is very comfortable for solo women. Normal precautions apply late at night; the old town and riverside are well lit and busy in the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent and safe to drink. Pack rain gear: Salzburg is known for persistent rain. Ticks carrying tick-borne encephalitis are present in forests and meadows from spring to autumn. EU visitors should bring a European Health Insurance Card (UK visitors a GHIC).

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 133 police, 144 ambulance, 122 fire.
