Is Riyadh safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Riyadh has very low street crime and is safe day and night for most visitors. The realistic risks are extreme heat, road traffic and breaking strict local laws; governments also note a regional security risk, so check current official advice before you travel.

The real risks

Heat

From May to September highs reach 39–44°C; sightsee in the morning and after sunset, and drink plenty of water.

Road traffic

Driving is fast and aggressive; use ride-hailing or the metro, and take care crossing wide roads.

Local laws

Alcohol and drugs are illegal with severe penalties; avoid public displays of affection and do not photograph government buildings or people without permission.

Desert trips

The Edge of the World has no shade and weak mobile signal, and it can close for weather; go with a licensed operator.

Regional security

Official advice mentions terrorism risk and missile or drone attacks, mainly near the Yemen border; check the latest advice.

Areas and times to take care

No districts are known as dangerous for visitors. Al Batha is crowded and busy, mainly with workers' shops and restaurants; take normal care with belongings.

Getting around safely

The Riyadh Metro and ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem, Jeeny) are safe and cheap. Avoid unmetered taxis that quote high fares. Walking is pleasant only in the cool months.

Solo and women travellers

Women can travel independently in Riyadh, and since 2019 foreign women do not have to wear an abaya or cover their hair. Modest dress is expected: cover shoulders and knees and avoid tight or transparent clothes. Some restaurants still have family sections.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is desalinated, but most people drink bottled water. Heat exhaustion and dehydration are the main health risks. Private hospitals in Riyadh are of a high standard; have travel insurance.

Emergency: 911 (unified emergency number in Riyadh); 999 police, 997 ambulance, 998 fire.
