Is Puglia safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Puglia is generally safe, with low levels of crime against visitors. The realistic risks are petty theft in busy towns and from parked cars, traffic fines for ZTL zones, summer heat and rocky swimming spots.
The real risks
Theft from cars
Do not leave bags or valuables visible in parked cars, especially at beaches and car parks.
Pickpocketing
Take normal care in crowded places such as Bari Vecchia, Polignano on summer weekends and stations.
ZTL fines
Most old towns are limited traffic zones; cameras fine drivers who enter, sometimes months later.
Rock jumping
At the Grotta della Poesia and cliffs at Polignano, jump only where locals do and the water is deep.
Heat
July and August reach about 29°C on average and hotter in heat waves; avoid midday sightseeing.
Raw seafood
Eat raw sea urchins and seafood only from clean, busy stalls.
Areas and times to take care
There are no well-known no-go areas for visitors. Bari's old town is lively and generally safe; take normal care around stations late at night.
Getting around safely
Trenitalia trains are safe and reliable; Ferrovie del Sud Est services are slower and sometimes replaced by buses. Use licensed taxis. Roads are good, but drivers can be assertive.
Solo and women travellers
Puglia is generally comfortable for solo women. Trains make the coast towns easy without a car; for the countryside, plan transport in advance, as buses are infrequent.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally safe, though many people drink bottled water. Summer heat and sun are the main risks. Hospitals in Bari, Brindisi and Lecce offer good care; EU visitors should carry an EHIC or GHIC.
