Is Plitvice Lakes safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Plitvice Lakes is very safe, with almost no crime. The realistic risks are slipping on wet boardwalks without railings, heat and crowds in summer, and icy paths in winter. Visitors who follow the park rules and wear good shoes have no problems.
The real risks
Slippery boardwalks
Wooden planks are often wet and many have no railings over the water. Wear shoes with grip and keep children close.
Crowds
In July and August, the boardwalks become congested, especially around Veliki slap at midday. Start at opening time.
Winter ice
Paths can be icy or closed, and the boats may not run. Check the park website for open routes.
Fines for rule-breaking
Swimming, feeding fish and stepping off the boardwalks are forbidden and fined.
Driving
The D1 road is winding with occasional fog; drive carefully, especially at night or in winter.
Areas and times to take care
There are no unsafe areas in or around the park. The villages near the entrances are quiet and safe at any hour.
Getting around safely
Buses on the Zagreb-Zadar and Zagreb-Split routes stop at both entrances; buy tickets in advance in summer. Inside the park, electric boats and the panoramic train are included and safe. If driving, park at the official car parks.
Solo and women travellers
Plitvice is very comfortable for solo women. The trails are busy in season and the villages are safe; normal precautions are enough.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe. In summer, carry water and sun protection, as some boardwalk stretches are exposed. Ticks can be present in the forests, so check yourself after walks off the main boardwalks. EU visitors should carry the European Health Insurance Card.
