Is Perth safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Perth is a safe city for visitors, with low levels of serious crime against tourists. The realistic risks are sun and heat, ocean conditions, wildlife in the bush, long empty roads on day trips, and some antisocial behaviour in nightlife areas late at night.

The real risks

Sun and heat

UV is extreme in summer and highs can exceed 35–40°C. Wear a hat and sun cream and drink water, even on cloudy days.

Ocean safety

Swim between the red and yellow flags at patrolled beaches such as Cottesloe and Scarborough; rips are common.

Sharks

Shark encounters are very rare but do happen off the WA coast. Swim at patrolled beaches and follow beach closures.

Wildlife

Snakes live in the bush and parks; stay on paths and wear closed shoes. Do not touch or feed quokkas on Rottnest.

Driving long distances

On the way to the Pinnacles or Margaret River, watch for kangaroos at dawn and dusk and take breaks on long roads.

Nightlife

Northbridge can be rowdy late at night on weekends; stay in busy streets.

Areas and times to take care

The CBD, Elizabeth Quay, Fremantle and the beaches are safe. Northbridge is the main nightlife district and is fine in the evening but can see alcohol-fuelled trouble after midnight on weekends; take normal care and use taxis or ride-hailing late.

Getting around safely

Transperth trains, buses and ferries are safe; trains have transit officers at night. Uber, DiDi and taxis are widely available. On rural roads, avoid driving at dawn and dusk because of wildlife.

Solo and women travellers

Perth is a comfortable city for solo women. Normal precautions apply in Northbridge late at night; use ride-hailing after dark and choose well-reviewed hostels.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. Sun protection is essential year-round; heatstroke and sunburn are common in summer. Bushfire smoke can affect air quality in hot months; check official alerts. Healthcare is excellent but costly for visitors without reciprocal agreements, so get travel insurance.
