Is Paros safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Paros is a very safe island with little crime. The realistic risks are scooter and quad accidents, strong meltemi winds in summer and late-night drinking in Naoussa's bars. Theft is rare.
The real risks
Scooters and quads
Many accidents involve tourists unused to scooters on gravel and narrow roads; wear a helmet and avoid riding after drinking.
Meltemi wind
In July and August, strong north winds can make beaches rough and delay ferries; choose sheltered south-facing beaches on windy days.
Nightlife
Naoussa and Parikia bars are busy late in summer; watch your drink and use taxis to get home.
Sun and heat
Little shade on many beaches and walks; carry water and sunscreen.
Water sports
Kitesurfing and windsurfing at Golden Beach and Pounta are best with a school if you are a beginner.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take extra care on roads at night around Naoussa and Parikia in high season, when traffic and drinking increase.
Getting around safely
Taxis are limited, so book ahead late at night in summer. KTEL buses run until late in July and August. If renting a scooter, check insurance and wear a helmet.
Solo and women travellers
Paros is very comfortable for women alone. Usual nightlife precautions apply in Naoussa. Tell someone your plans for walks such as the Byzantine path from Lefkes.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is often desalinated and not ideal to drink; most people buy bottled water. Strong sun and dehydration are the main issues. There is a health centre on the island; serious cases are transferred to Athens.
