Is Parga safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Parga is very safe, with little crime. The realistic risks are steep, slippery lanes, crowded beaches and boats in summer, and the cold water and currents of the Acheron gorge walk.

The real risks

Steep lanes

The old town streets and castle steps are steep and polished; wear shoes with grip.

Acheron walk

The water is about 12–14°C and the gorge floods after heavy rain; wear water shoes and do not go when the river is high.

Boat trips

Day boats may skip caves or Antipaxos in wind; follow the crew's decisions.

Heat

July and August reach about 32–33°C; carry water on the castle climb.

Traffic and parking

Narrow streets are busy in summer; park above town and walk.

Sea conditions

Respect beach flags and watch for boats and water sports near swimming areas.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. The harbour and old town are busy until late in summer, and very quiet in winter.

Getting around safely

Water taxis are the easiest way to reach the beaches. Taxis are available but few; book in advance for airport transfers from Aktion (about €70–90). Drive carefully on the winding coastal roads.

Solo and women travellers

Parga is comfortable for solo women, with lively evenings by the harbour and low crime. Water taxis and short walks make it easy to get around without a car.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally treated, but many visitors drink bottled water. Summer heat and sun are the main risks. The nearest hospitals are in Preveza and Igoumenitsa; travel insurance is recommended.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 police, 166 ambulance, 199 fire, 108 coastguard.
