Is Olympia safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Olympia is a very safe, quiet village, and crime against visitors is rare. The realistic concerns are summer heat on an open site, rural driving, and the usual care with bills at tourist tavernas. Evenings in the village are relaxed.

The real risks

Summer heat

In July and August highs average about 34–35°C. Enter the site at 8:00, carry water and a hat, and spend the hottest hours in the museums.

Rural roads

Mountain roads to Bassae and Andritsaina are narrow and winding, with few petrol stations. Fill the tank before leaving and drive in daylight.

Tourist-trap tavernas

Places right by the site entrance with picture menus and higher prices. Walk further along the main street.

Fish priced per kilo

On the coast and in Katakolo, ask to see the fish weighed and agree the total first.

Uneven ground

The site paths are gravel and dirt, and the ruins have loose stones. Wear comfortable shoes and do not climb on the monuments.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of concern in Olympia village or around the site. Katakolo is busy on cruise days; keep an eye on bags in the crowds there.

Getting around safely

The village and the site are on foot. Taxis are available for short trips, for example to Katakolo or Pyrgos. KTEL buses from Athens go to Pyrgos with local connections to Olympia; check timetables, as the suburban train has not always run. For Bassae and the coast, rent a car and drive in daylight.

Solo and women travellers

Olympia is an easy, friendly place for women travelling alone. The village is small and family-run hotels are the norm. Usual precautions apply on quiet rural roads, and it is wise to tell your hotel your plans if you drive alone into the mountains.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Greek towns; ask at your hotel if unsure, and bottled water is cheap. The main health issue is heat from June to September, with July highs of about 35°C, so drink plenty and avoid the midday sun. Pharmacies are in the village and in Pyrgos. EU visitors should carry an EHIC; others should have travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 for police and 166 for ambulance.
