Is Norway safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Norway is one of the safest countries in the world, with very low crime. The real risks are natural: changing mountain weather, cold, slippery paths, and driving on narrow fjord roads. Petty theft is uncommon but possible in central Oslo.

The real risks

Mountain weather

Conditions change fast even in summer; carry layers, water and a map, and check yr.no and varsom.no before hiking.

Hiking hazards

Famous hikes such as Trolltunga and Preikestolen are long and exposed; start early and turn back in bad weather.

Winter conditions

Ice, snow and darkness make winter travel challenging; use ice grips on shoes and winter tyres.

Narrow roads and tunnels

Fjord roads are narrow, with long tunnels and hairpins; drive slowly and use lay-bys.

Petty theft

Pickpocketing is rare but possible around Oslo S station and on busy trams.

Areas and times to take care

All main tourist areas are safe. In Oslo, the area around Oslo S station and parts of the inner east can feel rough late at night because of drug use, but are rarely dangerous to visitors. Take normal city care.

Getting around safely

Public transport is safe, clean and punctual. Taxis are expensive but regulated; ride-hailing apps work in larger cities. Driving is on the right, with strict speed and drink-driving rules.

Solo and women travellers

Norway is one of the easiest countries for women travelling alone. Normal city precautions apply at night. On remote hikes, tell someone your route and expected return.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent. Wear sunscreen in the mountains and on snow, and dress for cold even in summer at altitude. Mosquitoes and midges can be present in summer in the north. Healthcare is excellent but expensive for non-EEA visitors without insurance.

Emergency: Police 112, fire 110, ambulance 113
