Is Nice safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Nice is generally safe for visitors, with low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing and bag theft on the Promenade, the beaches, the tram and coastal trains, and car break-ins; serious incidents involving tourists are uncommon.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
On the tram, crowded buses and TER trains to Monaco, at the Cours Saleya market and around Nice-Ville station. Keep bags closed and in front.
Beach theft
Don't leave phones and bags unattended on the pebbles while swimming.
Phone and bag snatching
Occasionally from passing scooters on the Promenade; keep phones away from the road.
Car break-ins
Common at viewpoints and coastal car parks; never leave valuables visible.
Terrorism
France has a general terrorism threat; security is visible at big events on the Promenade.
Heat
July and August highs of about 29°C, hotter in heatwaves; drink water and use shade.
Areas and times to take care
Vieux Nice, the port, the Carré d'Or and the Promenade are busy and safe into the evening. The area around Nice-Ville station and parts of the northern quarters such as Ariane and Les Moulins have more problems at night; visitors rarely have reason to go there. In Vieux Nice late at night, watch your belongings in crowded bars.
Getting around safely
Trams, buses and TER trains are safe; watch for pickpockets in crowds. Licensed taxis are expensive but reliable; Uber and Bolt also operate. Avoid unofficial taxi touts at the airport. Driving on the coast road is beautiful but busy, and parking is difficult.
Solo and women travellers
Nice is comfortable for women travelling alone, with busy streets and many solo visitors. Expect occasional catcalling, as in other French cities; ignore it and keep walking. Use taxis or ride-hailing late at night and avoid the area around the station after dark.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Sun and heat in summer are the main health considerations. Pharmacies are everywhere; EU visitors should carry the EHIC, UK visitors the GHIC.
