Is Matera safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Matera is a safe, small city with low crime and a calm atmosphere even at night. The realistic risks are physical: steep, uneven steps without railings, slippery stone, summer heat with little shade, and the path across the gorge. Crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Steps and stone

The Sassi are all steps and polished limestone, with few railings. Wear shoes with grip, especially after rain and at night.

Heat

July and August reach about 32–34°C, and the stone reflects the heat. Walk early and late and carry water.

Gorge path

The path down to the suspension bridge and up to Murgia Timone is steep and closed after heavy rain. Do not attempt it in the dark.

Driving and parking

Cars are not allowed in most of the Sassi, with limited traffic zones and fines. Park in the car parks around the new town.

Petty theft

Uncommon, but watch bags in crowds at viewpoints and during the July festival.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of Matera visitors need to avoid. Take more care on unlit, uneven lanes of the Sasso Caveoso at night, on the edges of the ravine, and in the large crowds of the 2 July festival.

Getting around safely

Most visitors walk in town. Taxis are limited, so book through your hotel for early or late trips. The FAL train and buses to Bari are safe but stop relatively early in the evening; check current timetables. For trips outside town, rent a car or book a tour.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel comfortable in Matera: the town is small and the main streets and squares are lively in the evening. Usual precautions apply: avoid isolated paths in the ravine alone, especially after dark, and arrange late transport in advance.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink in Italy. The main health issue is summer heat on the steps: use sun protection, drink plenty and rest at midday. Pharmacies (green cross) can help with minor problems.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Italy and the EU); 118 for medical emergencies also works.
