Is Lucerne safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Lucerne is very safe, with low crime, and most visitors have no problems. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in the busiest tourist spots, mountain weather and terrain on excursions, and crowds during Fasnacht. Walking around town at night is generally fine.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Uncommon, but possible in crowds around the Chapel Bridge, Schwanenplatz, the station and on busy boats. Keep bags closed and phones secure.

Mountain weather

Conditions on Pilatus, Rigi and Titlis can change quickly, and it is much colder at the top. Check webcams and forecasts, and bring a warm layer.

Mountain paths

Stay on marked trails; some paths near the summits are steep and exposed, and snow can linger into early summer.

Fasnacht crowds

During carnival the old town is packed day and night. Watch your belongings and agree a meeting point with your group.

Lake swimming

The lake is cold for much of the year; swim at official lidos and bathing spots.

Areas and times to take care

The old town, the lakeside promenades, the Neustadt and the station area are all comfortable to walk in the evening. As in most cities, the station surroundings can be quieter and less pleasant late at night, but serious problems are rare. Take extra care with belongings in crowds at the Chapel Bridge and at Fasnacht.

Getting around safely

City buses, trains and lake boats are safe, clean and punctual; check last departures if you go out late. Taxis are licensed but expensive. Mountain railways and cableways are well maintained and close in bad weather or for maintenance, so check timetables, especially for Pilatus, whose cogwheel railway runs only from about May to November.

Solo and women travellers

Lucerne is very comfortable for solo women, and travelling alone is common. Normal precautions apply in bars late at night and in Fasnacht crowds. For mountain hikes, tell someone your route and stick to marked paths; the boats and railways make it easy to explore without a car.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and of excellent quality, and public fountains are usually drinkable unless marked otherwise. At altitude the sun is strong, so use sunscreen. Health care is excellent but very expensive, so travel insurance is essential; it is worth checking that it covers mountain rescue.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; in Switzerland 117 is police, 144 ambulance, 118 fire and 1414 Rega air rescue.
