Is Luang Prabang safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Luang Prabang is very safe, with low crime and a calm, early-to-bed atmosphere. The realistic risks are traffic and motorbike accidents, slippery paths at Kuang Si, minor overcharging and, in the countryside of Laos, unexploded ordnance off marked paths.
The real risks
Traffic and motorbikes
Accidents are the main risk for visitors; wear a helmet if you rent a motorbike, and take care crossing roads.
Kuang Si Falls
Rocks are slippery; swim only in the permitted pools and follow the signs.
Overcharging
Night-market stalls without prices and dollar or baht prices at poor rates; agree prices in kip first.
Drugs
Penalties are very harsh; do not buy or carry drugs.
Unexploded ordnance
In rural Laos, stay on marked paths when hiking.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid in town. A curfew means bars close around 23:30, so the town is quiet late at night.
Getting around safely
Tuk-tuks and the LOCA ride app are the usual options; agree the tuk-tuk fare before you set off. The Laos-China Railway station is about 20 minutes from town.
Solo and women travellers
Luang Prabang is comfortable for women travelling alone. Dress modestly in temples, covering shoulders and knees, and women should not touch monks or hand things to them directly.
Health, water and heat
Do not drink tap water; drink bottled or filtered water. March to May is very hot (about 33°C) and smoky from field burning; the rainy season brings mosquitoes, so use repellent. Check vaccinations and malaria advice with a travel clinic; serious medical cases may need transfer to Thailand.
