Is Los Angeles safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Los Angeles is generally safe for visitors who stick to the main tourist areas and use normal big-city sense. The realistic problems are car break-ins, petty theft, aggressive street sellers in Hollywood and visible homelessness in some districts; violent crime against tourists is uncommon. Traffic and wildfire smoke are practical concerns too.
The real risks
Car break-ins
Very common at trailheads, beaches and street parking. Never leave bags, even empty ones, visible in the car.
Petty theft
Phones and bags are taken at Venice Beach, Hollywood Boulevard and on transit. Keep valuables close.
Hollywood Boulevard hustlers
Costumed characters and 'free CD' sellers pressure tourists for money. Decline politely and keep walking.
Homelessness and drug use
Visible in parts of Downtown, Venice and Hollywood. It is mostly a matter of awareness rather than danger; avoid confrontations.
Wildfires and heat
Late summer and autumn bring fire risk and smoke; check closures and air quality. Inland heat often exceeds 32°C in summer.
Areas and times to take care
Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake and the main museum areas are comfortable day and evening. Downtown is busy by day, but parts of it, especially around Skid Row, are rough at night, so drive or use rideshare after dark. Venice Beach and Hollywood Boulevard are fine by day but need more care late at night.
Getting around safely
Uber and Lyft are widely used and the easiest option at night. Metro trains and buses are cheap and serve many sights, but some stations and late-night trains can feel uncomfortable; travel in busier carriages. Driving is the norm; watch for heavy freeway traffic.
Solo and women travellers
Solo women visit LA without problems in the main areas. Use rideshare at night (check the plate before getting in), avoid empty streets and beaches after dark, and keep drinks in sight in bars. On trails, go in daylight and tell someone your route.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. The sun is strong all year; carry water on hikes such as Griffith Park. Check air quality during wildfires. Healthcare is excellent but extremely expensive, so travel insurance is essential.
