Is Krakow safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Krakow is a safe city, with low violent crime. The realistic risks are bar scams aimed at men in the Old Town, pickpocketing in crowds, poor-rate currency exchange and rowdy nightlife on weekend nights.

The real risks

Bar and club scams

Men are invited, often by friendly women, to a nearby bar where the drinks bill runs to thousands of złoty; decline invitations from strangers and check prices before ordering.

Pickpocketing

Happens on the Main Market Square, Floriańska Street, crowded trams and at the Christmas market; keep bags closed.

Exchange offices and DCC

Poor rates at some kantors near the square and on card terminals offering euros; use bank ATMs and pay in złoty.

Weekend nightlife

The Old Town and Kazimierz are busy with stag and hen groups at weekends; avoid confrontations late at night.

Winter air and ice

Air quality can be poor on still winter days, and pavements can be icy.

Areas and times to take care

No neighbourhoods are known as dangerous for visitors. Late on weekend nights, the bar streets of the Old Town and Kazimierz can be loud and drunken; the main concern is scams and petty theft rather than violence.

Getting around safely

Trams and buses are safe and run late, with night lines. Use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than unmarked cars, and buy and validate tickets to avoid fines.

Solo and women travellers

Krakow is comfortable for women travelling alone, and the centre is busy and well lit at night. Usual precautions apply in bars; watch your drink.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Winters are cold (around 0°C) and air pollution can be high on still winter days; summers are warm. Auschwitz involves long walks with little shade, so bring water in summer.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency); 997 police, 999 ambulance.
