Is Kastoria safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Kastoria is a very safe, quiet town with little crime, and walking around the lake or the old quarters in the evening is normal. The realistic concerns are practical: steep, polished cobbles, cars on the narrow lake road, and winter conditions on the mountain roads.

The real risks

Slippery cobbles and steep lanes

The streets from the lakeshore up to Dexamenis Square are short but steep, and the cobbles are polished. Wear shoes with grip, especially in rain or ice.

Narrow lake road

The road around the peninsula is shared with cars in places. Walk facing traffic where there is no path and wear something visible at dusk.

Winter roads

Roads to Prespa, Nymfaio and the ski centres cross mountain passes. From December to March, check the weather and carry chains or use winter tyres.

Fog and ice

Morning fog over the lake is common in winter and can make driving slow; nights can fall well below zero.

Wildlife in the mountains

Brown bears live in the mountains of western Macedonia. On forest walks, stay on paths, make noise and never leave food out; see them safely at the Arcturos sanctuary.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of particular concern for visitors. The lakeshore paths are quiet late at night, so a torch is useful, and some stretches of the lake road have little lighting.

Getting around safely

Everything on the peninsula is walkable. Taxis are available in town for Dispilio or the bus station. KTEL buses from Thessaloniki take around 2.5–3 hours; the small Kastoria airport has limited domestic flights, often only a few a week. For the countryside, a hire car is the practical option.

Solo and women travellers

Kastoria is a relaxed, easy town for women travelling alone, with family-run guesthouses and tavernas. Usual precautions apply on quiet lakeside paths after dark, and on mountain walks, where it is wise to tell someone your route.

Health, water and heat

Tap water in Greek towns is generally safe to drink; ask at your hotel if unsure, and bottled water is cheap. Winters are cold: highs of about 8–10°C from December to February and lows around or below zero. Summer highs reach about 30–31°C, so bring water and a hat for the lake walk. Pharmacies are easy to find in the town centre. EU visitors should carry an EHIC; others should have travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 for police and 166 for ambulance.
