Is Ithaca safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Ithaca is very safe, with very low crime and a quiet village atmosphere. The realistic risks are narrow, winding roads, heat on exposed walking paths and the lack of transport late at night. Crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Narrow mountain roads

The 22 km road from Vathy to Kioni is narrow and winding. Drive slowly, use the horn on blind bends and take care on a scooter.

Heat on walks

Paths such as the one to the Arethusa spring have almost no shade. In July and August start before 9:00 and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person.

Getting stranded

Taxis are few and buses minimal, and Pisaetos port has no village. Book a taxi or car pickup in advance, especially for late ferries.

Pebble beaches and sea

Most beaches are pebble; water shoes help. Swim away from water-taxi and boat routes.

Overcharging

Rare, but fish is priced by weight; confirm the price before ordering.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of Ithaca that visitors need to avoid. Take extra care on unlit roads at night and on steep paths down to coves. Nights are quiet, so plan how you will get back to your room after dinner in another village.

Getting around safely

You need a car or scooter; book both ahead for July and August. Taxis exist but are few, so book them, particularly from Pisaetos. Water taxis from the Vathy quay serve Gidaki in summer; check the last boat back. Ferry timetables change each season, so check them before you plan.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel comfortable on Ithaca: it is small, quiet and family-oriented, and harassment is uncommon. Practical issues matter more than safety ones: transport is limited at night and some beaches and paths are isolated, so let your host know where you are walking and arrange rides in advance.

Health, water and heat

Many visitors drink bottled water on the Ionian islands; ask your host about the local tap water. Heat and sun are the main summer issues. There are pharmacies and a health centre on the island; serious cases are taken to Kefalonia or the mainland.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Greece and the EU); 166 for ambulance, 100 for police, 1571 for the tourist police.
