Is Honolulu safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Honolulu is generally safe for visitors, and violent crime against tourists is uncommon. The realistic risks are the ocean — strong currents and big winter surf — car break-ins at beaches and trailheads, and the strong sun. Petty theft in Waikiki is the main urban concern.
The real risks
Ocean conditions
Rip currents, shorebreak and big winter waves on the North Shore cause serious injuries every year. Swim at lifeguarded beaches, read the warning signs, and stay out of the water when surf is high.
Car break-ins
Rental cars at beaches, lookouts and trailheads are common targets. Leave nothing in the car and do not rely on the boot to hide valuables.
Petty theft
Bags left on the beach in Waikiki and phones in busy areas can be stolen. Do not leave belongings unattended while swimming.
Hiking
Trails can be muddy and slippery, and flash floods occur in valleys after rain. Stay on official trails; some well-known hikes, such as the Haʻikū Stairs, are closed and illegal to use.
Sun and heat
The sun is strong all year. Use reef-safe sunscreen (some chemical sunscreens are banned in Hawaii), wear a hat and drink plenty of water.
Areas and times to take care
Waikiki, Ala Moana, Kakaʻako and Kailua are busy and comfortable to walk in the evening. Take more care late at night in parts of Chinatown and downtown, where homelessness and occasional drug-related incidents are visible. Normal precautions apply in parks after dark.
Getting around safely
Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber, Lyft) are available throughout Honolulu, including from the airport. TheBus is safe and covers the island, though it is slow. If you drive, expect heavy traffic at rush hour and follow parking rules strictly, especially in residential beach areas like Lanikai.
Solo and women travellers
Honolulu is generally comfortable for solo women, and many travel alone to surf, hike and relax on the beaches. Use ride-hailing at night, avoid empty beaches and parks after dark, watch your drink in bars, and tell someone your plans before hiking alone.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. The main health risks are sunburn, dehydration and ocean injuries. Leptospirosis can be caught from fresh water and mud, so avoid swimming in streams and waterfalls with open cuts. Medical care is excellent but expensive, so travel insurance is essential.
