Is Ho Chi Minh City safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Ho Chi Minh City is generally safe, with low violent crime against tourists. The realistic risks are phone and bag snatching from passing motorbikes, overcharging by taxis and vendors, and chaotic traffic; heat and the wet season's downpours are the main practical issues.

The real risks

Snatch theft

Thieves on motorbikes grab phones and bags, especially in District 1 and on Bui Vien. Hold phones away from the road, carry bags on the side away from traffic and do not use your phone at the kerb.

Traffic

Millions of scooters; cross slowly and steadily so riders can predict you, and do not run. If you rent a scooter, you need a valid licence and a helmet.

Taxi and cyclo overcharging

Use Grab or reputable metered taxi companies (Vinasun, Mai Linh); agree cyclo prices in writing.

Shopping scams

Inflated prices at markets and 'free' shoe shines that end in high demands. Agree prices first.

Drinks

In nightlife areas, watch your drink and avoid unknown counterfeit spirits; buy drinks from reputable bars.

Flooding

In the wet season, heavy rain can flood streets quickly; wait it out in a café.

Areas and times to take care

District 1, District 3 and the riverside are busy and safe for visitors; Bui Vien walking street is loud and crowded at night, with pickpockets and snatch thieves, so keep belongings close. Quiet alleys late at night are best avoided alone, as anywhere. Cholon and the markets are fine by day.

Getting around safely

Grab (car and scooter) is the safest and most transparent option, with prices fixed in the app. Vinasun and Mai Linh taxis are metered. The new metro line is clean and safe. Wear the helmet offered on scooter taxis.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally find the city friendly and comfortable. The main issues are snatch theft and occasional unwanted attention in nightlife areas. Use Grab at night, dress respectfully at temples, and keep an eye on drinks in bars on Bui Vien.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water, and ice in cafés is usually factory-made. Heat (about 31–35°C all year) and humidity require sun protection and fluids. Dengue fever is present, especially in the wet season, so use insect repellent. Air quality can be poor; good international clinics exist in District 1 and District 7.

Emergency: 113 police, 115 ambulance, 114 fire.
