Is Evora safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Évora is a very safe town, and most visitors have no problems at all. The realistic risks are summer heat, uneven cobbles and occasional petty theft from cars. Violent crime against visitors is rare.

The real risks

Heat

July and August average about 33–34°C and often reach 35–40°C. Sightsee before 12:00 and after 18:00, and carry water.

Cobbles

The old streets are cobbled and steep in places, and slippery when wet. Wear comfortable shoes.

Car break-ins

Do not leave valuables visible in cars parked outside the walls or at the cromlech.

Dirt tracks

The track to the Almendres Cromlech is fine in dry weather but muddy after heavy rain; drive slowly.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas of concern in the old town by day or night. Praça do Giraldo and the main streets are busy in the evening; side lanes are quiet but generally safe.

Getting around safely

Taxis are available at ranks and by phone. Trains and Rede Expressos buses to Lisbon are safe and reliable. Driving inside the walls is difficult; park outside.

Solo and women travellers

Évora is comfortable for solo women. Eating alone is normal and the town is relaxed. Usual precautions are enough; on countryside trips, a tour is a simple option if you prefer not to drive alone.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. The main health risk is heat: drink plenty of water, wear a hat and avoid exertion at midday in summer. Pharmacies are easy to find.

Emergency: 112 for police, ambulance and fire.
