Is Dahab safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Dahab itself is calm and popular with independent travellers, and petty crime is low. The realistic risks are diving beyond your limits at the Blue Hole, heat and dehydration, sea urchins and coral, and road travel through checkpoints. Government advice for Sinai varies by area, so read it before booking.

The real risks

Deep diving at the Blue Hole

The deep arch at about 55 metres has caused many deaths; recreational divers should stay within their training depth.

Heat and dehydration

Summer highs reach about 36–39°C; carry water, especially on the Ras Abu Galum walk.

Coral and sea urchins

Wear reef shoes at shore entries and never stand on the coral.

Taxi overcharging

Agree fares before you get in.

Roads and checkpoints

Carry your passport for police checkpoints and avoid driving at night between towns.

Areas and times to take care

The town is relaxed and safe to walk in the evening. Travel advice for Sinai differs by area: UK advice is less restrictive for the coastal areas of South Sinai than for the interior, and US advice is stricter for Sinai as a whole. Check both, and confirm your travel insurance covers your plans.

Getting around safely

Use recommended taxis or hotel transfers and agree the price first. Desert trips should go with licensed local operators or Bedouin guides.

Solo and women travellers

Many solo women travel and dive in Dahab, and the town is more relaxed than many places in Egypt. Dress modestly away from the beach, agree prices in advance, and be firm with unwanted attention.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. Use strong sun protection. Check that your insurance covers diving and know where the nearest recompression chamber is; your dive centre will advise.

Emergency: 122 police; 123 ambulance; 126 tourist police.
