Is Colmar safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Colmar is a very safe small town, and serious crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks are pickpockets in crowds during the Christmas markets and summer peaks, and drink-driving on wine-tasting days. Walking around the old town at night is not a concern for most visitors.

The real risks

Pickpocketing at busy times

During the Christmas markets and on summer weekends, the lanes around Little Venice and the market squares are packed. Keep your bag closed and in front of you, and your phone out of back pockets.

Drinking and driving

France has strict alcohol limits for drivers. If you are tasting wine all day, use buses, bikes or a tour, or choose one driver who does not drink.

Slippery cobbles and canals

Cobbles are slippery in rain and frost, and some canal edges have low or no railings. Take care with children.

Summer heat

Highs average about 25°C from June to August, with hotter spells above 30°C. Carry water when cycling between villages.

Areas and times to take care

The old town, Little Venice, the station area and the wine villages are all fine to walk in, including in the evening. As in any town, the area around the station is quieter after dark; take the direct, well-lit streets.

Getting around safely

Taxis are licensed and can be called by phone or found at the station; they are few, so book ahead late at night. Trace town buses and regional TER trains are safe and reliable. On country roads, watch for cyclists and tractors during the grape harvest.

Solo and women travellers

Colmar is comfortable for solo women, and eating alone in a winstub or bistro is common. Usual precautions apply in crowded markets and late at night, and small-group wine tours are an easy way to see the villages without driving.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Pharmacies, marked with a green cross, can help with minor health problems. In summer, carry water and sun protection on vineyard walks; in winter, dress warmly for evenings at the markets.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies. In France you can also call 15 (medical), 17 (police) and 18 (fire).
