Is Christchurch safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Christchurch is a safe city with low levels of crime against visitors. The realistic risks are theft from cars, the strong sun and changeable weather, and driving on unfamiliar rural roads. Earthquakes are a real but small risk; the city has rebuilt to strict building codes.

The real risks

Theft from vehicles

Car and campervan break-ins happen at trailheads, beaches and city car parks. Do not leave bags or passports in the vehicle.

Sun

UV levels in New Zealand are very high in summer; sunburn happens fast even on mild days.

Driving

Many rural roads are narrow, winding and single-lane at bridges; remember to drive on the left and take breaks on long drives.

Earthquakes

Know the drill: drop, cover and hold. Hotels post emergency information.

Areas and times to take care

The central city, Riccarton, Merivale and the Botanic Gardens area are calm day and night. Some streets in the central city and around bus interchanges can feel empty late at night, so walk on busy, lit routes. Beaches like New Brighton and Sumner are popular, but swim only between the flags.

Getting around safely

Uber and licensed taxis are widely available, including at the airport. Metro buses are reliable but less frequent at night. If driving, keep left and be ready for black ice on hill roads in winter.

Solo and women travellers

Christchurch is a comfortable city for solo women. The centre is busy in the evenings around the laneway bars, and hostels are well managed. When hiking alone on the Port Hills or further afield, tell someone your route and carry water and a jacket.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. The sun is very strong in summer and the hot nor'west wind can push temperatures above 30°C. Weather changes quickly, especially on the Port Hills and in the Alps, so carry layers. Accidents are covered by ACC for visitors, but illnesses are not, so take travel insurance.

Emergency: 111
