Is Chios safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Chios is very safe, with low crime and a relaxed pace. The realistic risks are driving on narrow mountain roads, sun and heat, and wildfire danger in summer; crime against visitors is rare.

The real risks

Mountain driving

Roads in the north and centre are narrow and winding, with few petrol stations; drive slowly and fill up in town.

Wildfires

Recent fires have burned parts of the island. On hot, windy days follow fire warnings and never light fires outdoors.

Heat

Village visits and walks at Anavatos have little shade; go early or late and carry water.

Uneven paths

Anavatos and the medieval villages have steep, polished or broken stone paths; wear good shoes.

Rouketopolemos

On Easter night at Vrontados, thousands of rockets are fired between two churches; watch only from safe, official spots.

Sea conditions

The north coast is more exposed to wind; swim on the calmer south coast when the meltemi blows.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. Chios town's seafront and Aplotaria are lively in the evening. Normal care with valuables at the port when ferries arrive is enough.

Getting around safely

KTEL buses are safe but infrequent. Taxis are available in town and at the airport and port; agree the fare for longer trips. Driving is the most practical option, with care on mountain roads.

Solo and women travellers

Chios is comfortable for solo women, with a local, family atmosphere and low crime. Buses are few, so a car gives the most freedom; the town is busy and well lit in the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally treated, but many visitors drink bottled water. Summer heat and sun are the main health risks. Chios has a general hospital in the town; travel insurance is recommended.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 100 police, 166 ambulance, 199 fire, 108 coastguard.
