Is Calgary safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Calgary is a safe city for visitors, with low violent crime in the areas tourists use. The realistic risks are petty theft and vehicle break-ins, some visible street disorder around parts of downtown and transit stations, and in the Rockies, wildlife and fast-changing mountain weather.

The real risks

Car break-ins

Do not leave valuables visible in parked cars, in the city or at trailheads.

Downtown street disorder

Some CTrain stations and downtown streets have visible drug use or homelessness; stay alert, especially late at night.

Wildlife

In Banff and Kananaskis, carry bear spray on trails, make noise and keep a distance from elk and bears.

Mountain weather

Snow is possible at altitude in any month; check trail and road conditions.

Winter driving

Ice and chinook-driven melt-freeze cycles make roads slippery; use winter tyres.

Areas and times to take care

Downtown, the Beltline, Kensington and Inglewood are busy and fine for visitors. Take normal care late at night around some downtown CTrain platforms and the East Village edges, where street disorder is more visible. Residential neighbourhoods are calm.

Getting around safely

CTrain and buses are safe by day; late at night, taxis or rideshare are more comfortable. Uber and local taxis operate. In winter, allow extra time on roads.

Solo and women travellers

Calgary is generally comfortable for women travelling alone. Usual city precautions apply at night on transit and in bar districts like 17th Avenue. For hiking, join groups or tell someone your route, and carry bear spray.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe. The air is dry and the city sits at about 1,050 metres, so drink water and use sun protection; summer wildfire smoke can affect air quality. Winter cold (often -10 to -20°C) requires proper layers.

Emergency: 911
