Is Bruges safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Bruges is a very safe city, with low crime and a small, well-lit, walkable centre. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in summer crowds, slippery cobbles and cyclists. There are no particular areas visitors need to avoid.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Most likely in crowds on the Markt, the Burg, the canal-boat queues and at the Christmas market. Keep bags closed and in front.

Cyclists

Bikes are everywhere and fast; do not walk in bike lanes and look both ways before stepping off pavements.

Cobbles and canals

Uneven cobbles are slippery in rain and frost, and canal edges often have no railing. Wear good shoes, especially at night.

Restaurant bills

Not a scam as such, but terraces on the Markt are pricey; check menus before you sit.

Areas and times to take care

The whole historic centre is safe day and night, and walking the canals after 19:00 is one of the best things to do. As around many train stations, the area around Bruges station is quieter late at night, so stay on main routes when walking to the centre.

Getting around safely

Bruges is best on foot or by bike. Taxis wait at the station and the Markt and can be booked by phone; ride-hailing is limited compared with big cities. Trains to Brussels and Ghent run until late evening, and De Lijn buses link the station and the centre.

Solo and women travellers

Bruges is an easy and safe destination for solo women. The centre stays lively in the evening around the Markt and the beer cafés, and it is normal to eat or drink alone. Take the usual city precautions late at night, such as walking on well-lit streets back from bars.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. The main health concerns are minor: slippery cobbles in rain and frost, and cold, damp weather from November to March. Pharmacies are easy to find and EU visitors should bring their EHIC or GHIC.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies (101 for police).
