Is Brisbane safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Brisbane is a safe city for visitors, with low levels of crime in the areas tourists use. The realistic risks are the sun and heat, swimming conditions on surf beaches outside the city, and some late-night drunkenness in nightlife areas. Wildlife is less of a concern in the city than many visitors expect.
The real risks
Sun and heat
The UV index is extreme for much of the year. Wear a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses, and drink water, especially from November to March when highs reach 29°C with high humidity.
Late-night disorder
Fortitude Valley's bars and clubs get crowded and rowdy on Friday and Saturday nights. Stay with friends and use the designated safe night precinct taxi ranks.
Ocean swimming
On beaches outside Brisbane, such as North Stradbroke and the Gold Coast, rips are a real danger. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
Storms and floods
Summer storms can be violent and the river has flooded in some years. Follow warnings and never drive through floodwater.
Areas and times to take care
The CBD, South Bank, West End and New Farm are comfortable day and night. Fortitude Valley is fine but busy and boisterous at weekend closing times. Riverside paths are pleasant but quiet late at night, so stick to lit routes.
Getting around safely
Uber, DiDi and licensed taxis are widely available; at weekends, use the supervised taxi ranks in Fortitude Valley. Trains and buses run until around midnight, with NightLink services on Friday and Saturday nights. Tap on and off with a Go Card or contactless bank card.
Solo and women travellers
Brisbane is an easy city for solo women. The centre and South Bank are busy and well lit. In the nightlife areas, watch your drink, and use rideshare or official ranks to get home. Hostels are well run and often have women-only dorms.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe. Sunburn is the most common health problem, even on cloudy days. Mosquitoes can carry Ross River virus in summer, so use repellent at dusk. Medicare does not cover most visitors, so carry travel insurance.
