Is Bordeaux safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Bordeaux is a safe city for visitors, with a calm old town and busy quays into the evening. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowds and on trams, bike theft and some rowdiness at night in nightlife areas. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Possible on busy trams, on Rue Sainte-Catherine and around Saint-Jean station. Keep bags closed and phones out of back pockets.

Bike theft

Bikes are stolen often; use a strong lock or the V3 shared scheme.

Station area at night

The area around Gare Saint-Jean can feel seedy late at night; take a tram or taxi rather than walking long distances.

Cyclists and trams

Trams are quiet and cyclists fast; look both ways when crossing tram tracks and bike lanes.

Nightlife

Bars in Saint-Pierre and Victoire can be loud late at weekends; keep an eye on drinks.

Areas and times to take care

The old town, Chartrons, Saint-Pierre and the Triangle d'Or are generally calm at all hours. Take extra care around Gare Saint-Jean and parts of Saint-Michel and Cours de la Marne late at night, where petty crime and drug dealing are more visible. Place de la Victoire, the student nightlife hub, is lively and busy, but keep belongings close.

Getting around safely

Trams run until around midnight-1:00 and are safe. Licensed taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber work well. The centre is easy to walk at night along well-lit streets and quays.

Solo and women travellers

Women generally feel comfortable travelling alone in Bordeaux. Usual precautions apply: avoid empty streets around the station late at night, use taxis or ride-hailing after the trams stop, and watch your drink in busy bars. Street harassment can occur but is rarely threatening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Summer heatwaves can push temperatures above 35°C, so carry water and rest in the shade at midday. Pharmacies (green cross) are plentiful for minor issues.

Emergency: 112 (EU); SAMU ambulance 15, police 17, fire 18
