Is Bergen safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Bergen is a very safe city with low crime, and most visitors never have a problem. The realistic risks are the weather and terrain: slippery wet stone, steep hiking paths, fast-changing mountain conditions and cold water. Pickpocketing is rare but possible in summer crowds at Bryggen and the Fish Market.
The real risks
Weather on hikes
Rain, fog and wind can roll in quickly on Ulriken and the Vidden trail. Check the forecast, carry waterproofs and turn back if visibility drops.
Slippery streets
Cobblestones and steep lanes are slick in rain and ice in winter; wear shoes with grip.
Cold water
The sea stays cool even in summer; swim only where locals do and do not go far out.
Pickpocketing
Rare, but watch bags in busy summer crowds at Bryggen and the Fish Market.
Prices at the Fish Market
Not a safety issue, but check prices per weight before ordering seafood.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas that visitors need to avoid. The centre around Torgallmenningen and the bars can be noisy on weekend nights; the area around the bus and train stations is busy but not dangerous.
Getting around safely
Buses and the Bybanen light rail are safe and reliable; buy tickets in the Skyss app. Taxis are safe but expensive, and app-based options also operate. Night buses run on weekends.
Solo and women travellers
Bergen is one of the easiest cities for women travelling alone, with low crime and a respectful culture. Normal precautions in bars at night are enough. For hikes, tell someone your route and carry a charged phone.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe and excellent. Pack waterproofs and warm layers in any season; in summer the sun is long-lasting, and in winter days are very short. Ticks can be present in grassy areas around western Norway in summer.
