Is Antwerp safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Antwerp is generally safe for visitors, and the old town, Het Zuid and the riverside are pleasant to walk by day and evening. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in busy places, bike theft and some street drug dealing near the central station at night. Drug-related crime linked to the port is reported in the news, but it rarely affects tourists.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Most common on the Meir shopping street, in Antwerpen-Centraal station, on crowded trams and at the Christmas market. Keep your bag closed and phone in a front pocket.

Station area at night

The streets around Antwerpen-Centraal can feel rough late at night, with occasional drug dealing. Walk on the main lit streets or take a tram or taxi.

Bikes and trams

Cycle lanes are busy and trams run in the streets. Look both ways and do not walk in the red cycle lanes.

Bike theft

If you rent a bike, lock it to a fixed stand with a good lock, or use Velo stations.

Areas and times to take care

The old town, the Grote Markt, Het Zuid, Eilandje and Zurenborg are fine in the evening. Take more care around the central station and the streets just north of it late at night. As in any city, avoid empty parks after dark.

Getting around safely

Use licensed taxis from ranks or by phone; ride-hailing apps also operate. De Lijn trams and buses are safe, though crowded at rush hour; buy your ticket before boarding in the app or by SMS. Trains to Brussels and the airport are frequent and safe.

Solo and women travellers

Antwerp is comfortable for solo women, and eating or drinking alone in cafés is normal. Use common-sense precautions around the station area late at night and keep an eye on your drink in busy bars.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Medical care is of a high standard; EU visitors should bring a European Health Insurance Card, and others need travel insurance. Rain is possible in any month, so carry a jacket.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies. Police: 101.
