Tips

Common questions

Is there a train?

No. There is no passenger train between Skopje and Sofia, as the rail link between the two countries is incomplete. Buses and driving are the options. Check current information if you are interested in rail developments. The bus also has the advantage of handling the border formalities in one stop for all passengers.

How long is the bus?

About 5–6 hours, including time at the border. Several bus companies operate the route, with a few departures daily. Buy tickets at the Skopje bus station or online, and check current timetables. Bring snacks and water, as stops can be short, and keep your passport handy for the border.

How long is the drive?

About 3 h 30–4 hours via Kumanovo and the Deve Bair crossing. North Macedonian motorways have tolls, and Bulgaria requires an e-vignette. Border waits can add time, especially at holidays. The road over the border is a mountain road with bends, so allow extra time in winter or bad weather.

What documents do I need?

A valid passport or, for EU citizens, a national ID card. Bulgaria is in the Schengen area, so this is an external border with full checks. Drivers need vehicle registration and, for non-EU cars, green card insurance. Check current visa rules for your nationality for both countries.
