How to get from Sarajevo to Split
There is no railway between the two cities, so the choice is bus or car. Buses take about 6–7 hours, usually via Mostar, while driving takes about 4 h 30–5 h with a border crossing.
Best option: Bus. Direct buses run daily and handle the border crossing for you.

Tips

- Have some Bosnian convertible marks (KM) for the bus luggage fee and snacks.
- Book summer buses a day or two ahead.
Common questions
Is there a train from Sarajevo to Split?
No. A railway runs from Sarajevo to Mostar, but it does not continue to Split. You can take the train to Mostar and a bus from there, although the direct bus from Sarajevo is simpler. Check current timetables for the Sarajevo–Mostar train if you want to ride it for the scenery.
How long is the bus?
About 6 to 7 hours, including a stop and the border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Most buses run via Mostar and along the coast or the A1 motorway. In summer border queues can add an hour or more. There are a few departures a day, so plan around the schedule.
Can I drive across the border?
Yes, but check that your rental agreement allows Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and carry the insurance green card. The drive takes about 4½ to 5 hours. Croatian motorways are tolled, Bosnian main roads are mostly not. Expect full passport checks, as Croatia is in the Schengen area.
Do I need to book ahead?
Outside summer you can usually buy a bus ticket at the station on the day. In July and August, and around holidays, buy a day or two ahead, either online or at the station, to be sure of a seat. Private transfers should be arranged at least a day in advance.
