Tips

Common questions

Is there a train from Rotorua to Wellington?

No. Rotorua has no passenger train. The Northern Explorer runs between Auckland and Wellington through Hamilton and National Park, but not via Rotorua. Fly, drive or take the InterCity coach instead. If you want a rail trip, you could travel to Hamilton and join the Northern Explorer there, but it runs only on some days and the whole trip takes far longer.

How long is the drive from Rotorua to Wellington?

About 6 h for about 460 km via Taupō and the Desert Road, without long stops. There are no tolls. Winter snow can close the Desert Road, so check road conditions before setting off. Many travellers stop overnight at Taupō or Tongariro.

What is the cheapest way from Rotorua to Wellington?

The InterCity coach is usually cheapest, from about NZ$40 booked in advance, but takes about 7 h 30 to 8 h. Flights booked early can also be good value. For a group, driving is economical if you already have a car.

Can I stop at Tongariro on the way?

Yes, if you drive. Tongariro National Park is a short detour from the Desert Road, and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a popular day hike. Plan an overnight stop near National Park or Turangi, and book shuttles for the hike in advance.
