Tips

Common questions

How long is the ferry from Rhodes to Symi?

Fast catamarans take about 50 minutes to 1 h 15, depending on whether they call at Panormitis first. Day-excursion boats from Mandraki are slower, around 1 h 30 to 2 h. Timetables change with the season, so check the current schedule before travelling.

Can I visit Symi as a day trip from Rhodes?

Yes. Day-excursion boats leave Rhodes town in the morning, often stopping at Panormitis monastery, and give a few hours in Gialos harbour before returning in the late afternoon. It is enough to see the harbour and climb to Chorio, but staying a night lets you enjoy Symi after the day crowds leave.

Is there a flight to Symi?

No, Symi has no airport. The nearest airport is Rhodes, about 1 hour away by fast boat. Fly into Rhodes from Athens or abroad, then take a catamaran or ferry to Symi. If your flight lands late, you may need a night in Rhodes town before the morning boat.

Do I need to book the boat in advance?

Outside July and August you can usually buy tickets on the day at Rhodes harbour. In peak summer, booking a day or two ahead is wise, especially for the fast catamarans. Excursion boats sell tickets on the quay and through agencies; compare departure and return times before you choose.
