Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct train from Puglia to Sorrento?

No. You take a Trenitalia train to Naples, which may be direct or require a change, and then the Circumvesuviana local train to Sorrento, about 1 h 10. Allow about 5 hours from Bari. Check current timetables, as new high-speed sections are being opened in stages.

What is the cheapest way?

Usually a coach from Bari or other Puglia towns to Naples, followed by the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. Coach tickets booked ahead are often cheaper than trains. Driving is cost-effective for groups but add tolls, fuel and expensive Sorrento parking.

How long is the drive?

About 4 hours from Bari via the A14 and A16 motorways towards Naples, then the A3 and the road along the Sorrento peninsula. Tolls are moderate. In summer, traffic near Sorrento can be heavy, so allow extra time.

Can I stop on the way?

Yes. By car, Matera, Benevento or the Amalfi Coast can be included. By train, staying a night in Naples is easy and allows you to visit Pompeii, which is on the Circumvesuviana line to Sorrento. Herculaneum is also on the same Circumvesuviana line.
