Tips

Common questions

How long is the bus?

About 3 h 30 to 4 h 30, depending on traffic. Buses leave from Terminal Central del Norte in Mexico City. First-class companies offer comfortable seats and onboard toilets. Buses usually make few stops, and tickets can be bought on the companies' websites or at the terminal ticket desks. Arrive 30 minutes early.

Can I fly?

The nearest airports are Querétaro and León/Bajío. With airport time and transfers, flying is rarely faster than the bus from Mexico City. From Querétaro airport the drive to San Miguel takes about an hour, and from León/Bajío about 1 h 30, so transfers add time.

Can I do it as a day trip?

It is not recommended. With 3 to 4 hours each way, you would have little time in San Miguel. Stay at least one night. Querétaro or Guanajuato also make good stops on a wider trip through the Bajío region, so many travellers combine them over several days.

Is driving safe?

The 57D toll highway is the main route and is widely used. Drive in daylight and use toll roads. Check current travel advice before driving. Fill up before you leave and keep cash or a card for the toll booths. Allow extra time for traffic in Mexico City.
