Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct train from Litochoro to Meteora?

No direct train. You take Hellenic Train from Litochoro station and change, usually at Larissa or Paleofarsalos, for Kalambaka, the station for Meteora. The trip takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on connections. Check current timetables, as there are only a few suitable connections a day.

How long is the drive?

About 2 hours for roughly 170 km, via the A1 motorway to Larissa and then via Trikala to Kalambaka. There are tolls on the motorway section. From Kalambaka, the road up to the monasteries takes another 10–20 minutes. Parking near the monasteries is limited in summer.

Can I do it as a day trip?

By car it is possible: two hours each way leaves time to visit two or three monasteries. Remember that each monastery closes one day a week and they close in the afternoon. By train it is too long for a comfortable day trip, so stay in Kalambaka or Kastraki overnight.

Where should I stay for Meteora?

Kalambaka has the train station, most hotels and restaurants. Kastraki, a village just below the rocks, is quieter and closer to the monastery roads. Both are good bases. Staying overnight lets you see the monasteries in the morning light and avoid the midday tour buses.
