Common questions
Which station on Lake Garda is closest to Milan?
Desenzano del Garda–Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda, both at the southern end of the lake, are on the Milan–Verona–Venice main line. Desenzano is slightly closer to Milan. Both have frequent regional and high-speed trains to Milano Centrale. Towns further north on the lake have no railway and need a bus or ferry to reach these stations.
Can I do Milan as a day trip from Lake Garda?
Yes. From Desenzano or Peschiera, high-speed trains take about 50 minutes and regionals about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30, with trains at least hourly. That leaves a full day for the Duomo, the Galleria and Brera. Book the Last Supper well in advance if you want to see it, as slots sell out weeks ahead.
What is the cheapest way from Lake Garda to Milan?
Regional trains are cheap at about €10–15 and need no reservation. Coaches can be cheaper when booked in advance but run less often. High-speed Frecciarossa tickets cost more but save about half an hour; early-booking fares can be close to regional prices. Driving adds motorway tolls and Milan parking costs.
Is it worth driving from Lake Garda to Milan?
Usually not if you are going to the city centre. The A4 can be congested, you pay tolls, and central Milan has the Area C congestion charge and expensive parking. Driving makes sense only if you are staying on the north or west shore of the lake, far from the railway, or continuing to other places by car.
