How to get from Kythira to Mani
From Kythira you take the ferry from Diakofti to Neapoli on the Peloponnese (about 1 h) and drive about 2 h to the Mani, or, on some days, the ferry to Gythio (about 2 h 30), the gateway to the Mani. A car is essential once you arrive.
Best option: Ferry. The ferry is the only practical link, and the Neapoli crossing is short and frequent.

Common questions
How do I get from Kythira to the Mani?
Take the ferry from Diakofti to Neapoli, about an hour, then drive about two hours via Molaoi and Gythio into the Mani. On some days a ferry sails from Diakofti to Gythio, about two and a half hours, which brings you closer. Check current timetables, as they vary by season.
Is there a ferry from Kythira to Gythio?
Yes, a conventional ferry on the route from Kissamos in Crete continues via Kythira to Gythio a few times a week. It takes about two and a half hours. Gythio is the gateway to the Mani, about thirty minutes from Areopoli. Check the timetable before planning.
Do I need a car in the Mani?
Yes, for most visitors. The Mani's tower villages, coves and the Diros Caves are spread over a long peninsula, and buses are infrequent. Bring a car across on the ferry or rent one in Gythio or Kalamata. Roads are good but winding, and petrol stations are sparse in the south of the peninsula.
Can I take my car on the Kythira ferry?
Yes. Both the Neapoli and Gythio ferries carry cars. In July and August, book vehicle space in advance. Check with your rental company that taking the car on ferries is allowed and that insurance covers it. Arrive at Diakofti at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure, as loading starts early and late cars may be turned away when the deck is full.
