Common questions
Is there a direct train from Kyoto to Takayama?
Only very few. One Limited Express Hida service a day typically runs directly from Osaka via Kyoto to Takayama, taking about 4 hours or a little more. Most travellers instead take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya and change to the Hida there, which is faster overall. Check the current JR timetable, because the direct service runs only at set times.
Is the trip covered by the Japan Rail Pass?
Yes. Both the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya (Hikari and Kodama trains; Nozomi trains need an extra supplement with the pass) and the Limited Express Hida from Nagoya to Takayama are JR services covered by the nationwide Japan Rail Pass. Regional passes such as the Takayama-Hokuriku pass may also be good value. Reserve seats in advance on busy dates.
Is the highway bus a good option?
It can be. A few highway buses a day run to Takayama and are usually cheaper than the train, though they take about 4 to 5 hours. Seats must be reserved in advance. The train is faster, more frequent with the Nagoya change and more comfortable, but the bus is good value if you do not have a rail pass.
Can I visit Takayama as a day trip from Kyoto?
Not realistically. With about 3 h 30 to 4 h 30 each way, a day trip leaves little time for the old town, morning markets and the Hida Folk Village. Stay at least one night in Takayama; it also works well as a base for Shirakawa-go, which is about an hour away by bus.
