How to get from Kos to Symi
Ferries and catamarans link Kos with Symi, taking about 1 h 30–2 h 30 depending on the vessel and stops. Dodekanisos Seaways catamarans and some Blue Star Ferries sailings serve the route, more often in summer. There are no flights; Symi has no airport.
Best option: Ferry. It is the only direct way between the two islands.

Common questions
How often do ferries run?
In summer, several times a week or more, using catamarans and conventional ferries. In winter, services are fewer. Some sailings stop at Nisyros or Tilos on the way, which affects journey time. Check the current timetables of Dodekanisos Seaways and other operators before planning.
Can I do it as a day trip from Kos?
Sometimes, in summer, if the timetable allows an early outbound and a late return. Most organised day trips to Symi run from Rhodes instead. Staying at least one night lets you enjoy Gialos in the evening when the day visitors have left.
Is there a flight?
No. Symi has no airport. Kos airport has flights to Athens and many international destinations in summer, while the nearest airport to Symi is on Rhodes. Ferries and catamarans are the only way between Kos and Symi. Many travellers combine both islands by flying into Kos and leaving from Rhodes, or the other way round.
Do I need to book ahead?
In July and August, it is wise to book catamaran tickets online a day or two ahead. Outside peak months, you can usually buy at the port. Rough seas can cancel catamarans, so allow flexibility before any flight home.
