Common questions
How long is the drive?
About 1 h 45 to 2 hours for roughly 140 to 160 km, mostly on the Egnatia Odos motorway. The road through the Pindus mountains has tunnels and bridges. In winter check for snow, especially near Metsovo. Fuel up before the mountains.
Is there a bus?
There is no direct bus. You would need to change, for example in Kozani or Ioannina, which takes about 4 to 6 hours. Check current KTEL timetables, as connections are limited. For this route, a rental car is strongly recommended.
Can I do it as a day trip?
Yes, by car. About 2 hours each way leaves time to visit Metsovo's museums, try local cheese and walk the old streets. Staying a night is also good. The Averoff gallery and the stone mansions are the main sights, and the town is a short walk from end to end.
Do I need winter equipment?
In winter, snow and ice are possible on mountain sections, especially near Metsovo. Carry chains or use winter tyres, and check road conditions before you travel. The Egnatia Odos is usually cleared quickly after snow, but side roads into town can be icy in the morning and evening.
