Common questions
How long is the drive?
About 2 hours via Grevena to Kalambaka. Parts of the route use the Egnatia Odos motorway, with small tolls. The rest is on regional roads through the mountains. In winter, check road conditions for snow. Allow extra time for stops in villages and for slower trucks on the climbs.
Is there a direct bus?
No. Public transport requires at least one change, and services are limited. The trip can take 4–6 hours or more. Check current KTEL timetables before planning, especially at weekends. For most visitors without a car, a private transfer or a guided tour is the more realistic way to cover the route in a reasonable time.
Is there a train?
There is no railway in Kastoria. Kalambaka has a train station with services to Larissa and Athens, but it does not help on this route. Rail access to Meteora works from Athens or Thessaloniki via Larissa or Palaiofarsalos, but not from western Macedonia, where Kastoria lies.
Can I do it as a day trip?
Yes, by car. With about 2 hours each way, you can visit a few of the Meteora monasteries in a day. Staying overnight in Kalambaka or Kastraki allows sunrise or sunset views. Plan your arrival for the morning if possible, because monastery opening hours are limited and differ from one monastery to the next.
