Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct ferry from Ikaria to Patmos?

Sometimes. In summer there are usually a few weekly sailings linking Agios Kirykos with Patmos, occasionally calling at Fourni. In winter direct connections may not exist, and you would need to go via Samos or Piraeus. Timetables change every season, so check current schedules before you commit to dates.

How long does the crossing take?

Roughly 2 to 4 hours, depending on the boat and whether it stops at Fourni or other islands on the way. Smaller local boats can be slower and more affected by the sea. If you route via Samos, add several hours for the connection, possibly including an overnight stay.

Can I fly between Ikaria and Patmos?

No. Ikaria has a small airport with flights mainly to Athens, but Patmos has no airport at all. Flying via Athens and then taking a ferry would take far longer than sailing directly. The ferry is the only practical way between the two islands.

Do I need to book ahead?

In July and August booking a few days ahead is sensible, as small boats have limited capacity. Outside peak season tickets are normally available at the port agencies. The bigger risk is cancellation in strong winds, so leave a buffer day if you have a flight to catch afterwards.
