Tips

Common questions

How long is the ferry from Hvar to Split?

Fast catamarans from Hvar town take about 1 hour to Split, a little longer if they stop at other islands. The car ferry from Stari Grad takes about 2 hours, and you also need around 20 minutes to drive from Hvar town to Stari Grad. Check the current timetables, because frequency drops sharply between October and May.

Do I need to book the Hvar to Split catamaran in advance?

In July and August, yes, especially for afternoon and evening sailings, which often sell out. Tickets can be bought online from the operators or at harbour kiosks. Outside the peak season you can usually buy on the day, but there are far fewer departures, so plan around the timetable rather than assuming a boat every hour.

Can I take a car from Hvar to Split?

Yes, but only on the Jadrolinija car ferry from Stari Grad, not on the catamarans from Hvar town. The crossing takes about 2 hours. In high season, queues can mean waiting for a later sailing, so arrive at least an hour early. Booking a vehicle ticket online where available reduces the risk of being turned away.

Can I visit Split as a day trip from Hvar?

Yes. With a catamaran taking about an hour each way, you can spend most of the day in Split visiting Diocletian's Palace, the Riva promenade and Marjan hill. Check the last return sailing before you go, because evening departures are limited outside July and August and missing it means a night in Split.
